Cross-border integrated approach on journey planning and ticketing services is the part of the answer to major challenges in the Road to Single European Transport Area – a long term strategy to create a sustainable EU transport network by 2050, with seamless connections for people, regions and businesses. Transport is vital to the European economy. Without good connections Europe will not grow or prosper.

However, despite the European Commission defining integrated ticketing as a combination of different transport methods into one single ticket, such definition is not always shared by smart ticketing solution vendors.

Most smart ticketing solution vendors only aim to provide “payment only” models with interoperable tickets, with many such services cover only specific regions and that few are based on open standards, multimodal, and doesn’t pay particular attention to the language in which services are provided, taking into account tourists and the use of minority languages, which hampers further developments in this sector.

In addition, incompatibility and inconsistency of data layers, the diversity and the missing interoperability of data formats and data exchange protocols undermine the existence of integrated multimodal information, planning and ticketing services in the EU and create additional costs.
